Believe it or not, not all children want to be part of a wedding ceremony. Some, like my son, have to be bribed to wear a jacket and tie (he’s getting the latest Pokémon book.) Others have to be enticed.
My nieces were excited about being flower girls, but shy. For the youngest, it’s scary to walk and toss rose petals in front of an audience. Fortunately, these little girls, raised in the land of Disney and huge fans of the movie “Enchanted,” were easily persuaded to be a part of the fairytale celebration, especially if they could see a true love’s kiss.
I have to admit, my feminist sensibilities were riled by the idea that little girls were being conned into thinking that a wedding is a happily-ever-after story ending. I was tempted to get on my soapbox to shout out my “Marriage Is Hard Work” sermon, but I kept my mouth shut.
This beautiful celebration wasn’t the time for a gritty speech. And really, what’s wrong in believing in a little magic? There was something truly magical in the parting of the rain for a glorious wedding, or the sweet sparkle of the bride’s smile and the solemnity of the groom’s countenance. In the golden light under a sweeping willow tree, birds chirped, bees buzzed, well, you get the picture. Really, you could almost hear the wildlife singing during the ceremony.
Besides, I know that no matter how long we’re married, I treasure the magic and fantasy in my own marriage. I appreciate the knight in shining armor who delivers my bedside morning coffee, and the spell that attracts us even though the youthful glow is long gone.
I’ll save the dose of reality speech for another day, and just savor the beauty and magic of this occasion. For a few days, my extended family gathered in one place. We talked, laughed, danced, and avoided excessive drama. Now, that’s a wish-come-true!
